Overview of McAlister Institute Kiva Learning Center for Women and Children
The MacAlister Institute Kiva Learning Center for Women and Children is a long-term residential program for women struggling with alcoholism and drug addiction. The mission of McAlister Institute is to improve the quality of life of individuals struggling with addiction by providing them with professional services and give them the miracle of recovery. The Kiva Learning Center is one of the 26 programs that the McAlister Institute offers. This program is specifically designed for women, pregnant women, and women with children who want to rid their lives from the negative effects of addiction. The residential program’s duration is around 90 days during which clients are offered counseling and evidence-based therapies which help them reclaim their freedom from drugs and alcohol. Women are offered treatment planning education, parenting classes, mental health counseling, and recovery support services to help them achieve lasting recovery. The center offers quality child care services to the clients’ children during their treatment at the facility. Women are also offered supportive housing and vocational assistance so that they could be enabled to secure good jobs after leaving the center. Women are taught how to become independent and productive members of the community and be able to support themselves and their children in a happy, healthy, sober, and fulfilling life.
Housing and Food at the Kiva Learning Center for Women and Children
The McAlister Institute Kiva Learning Center for Women and Children is located in Lemon Grove, which is a suburb of the San Diego County in California. It is a 120-bed facility that offers good quality residential facilities to women and children. Women without children stay in triple or quadruple-occupancy rooms with other women. Women with children are assigned separate rooms where a mother can stay with her children. Children aged 12 or below are allowed to stay at the center with their mother. All rooms are furnished with beds, side tables, and closets. There is a common room at the center which is equipped with a flat-screen TV. Residents are allowed to watch TV on the weekends or when they are free in their schedule. A day care center is available on the campus where younger children are provided with quality child care services during the time their mothers are in therapy. Residents are encouraged to take part in healthy recreational activities such as sports, exercise, yoga, and meditation. The center has an in-house kitchen staff which prepares three delicious and healthy meals for residents each day. Meals are served in the cafeteria where all residents and children eat together. Sandwiches and a salad bar is available 24/7 at the cafeteria.

Steve is a graduate of the University of California, San Diego and received his Juris Doctor from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. He is a licensed attorney who started his journey of recovery at McAlister in 1983. In 2014, he joined the Board at McAlister as the President.
Elizabeth is a licensed marriage and family therapist who serves as the Director of the Board at McAlister. She specializes in treating military families, veterans, and youth for behavioral health issues. She serves as the Regional Supervisor of the Military and Family Life Counseling Program of a health care management organization.
Marc is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and has been serving the behavioral health care industry for more than 20 years. He specializes in treating patients of substance abuse and mental health.
