Overview of The Salvation Army Harbor Light Center

The Salvation Army Harbor Light Center is a rehabilitation center that offers a number of treatment services to men and women for alcoholism and drug addiction. The mission of the Salvation Army is to help people in need through a Christian-centered approach in which they are taught the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Clients are passed on the message of the Bible and the love of God which enables them to embark on a spiritual journey through which they can achieve lasting recovery. The staff members at the center consider themselves as an Army on the front lines fighting with love to provide goodness and assistance to all those in need. The staff members wear a uniform to remind themselves of their mission and to remember that they represent something larger than themselves. The center offers a number of treatment programs for addiction including detox, inpatient, outpatient, and residential programs. The detox program has a duration of 7 to 90 days whereas the residential program can last from 6 to 24 months. The treatment programs utilize evidence-based therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). Clients are also encouraged to participate in 12-step meetings that focus on healing the mind, body, and spirit of each individual.

Housing and Food at The Salvation Army Harbor Light Center

The Salvation Army Harbor Light Center is located in San Francisco on the corner of Ninth and Harrison in the South of Market Neighborhood. The center can accommodate a total of 104 patients 60 of which are men, 24 women, and 20 veterans. Dorm-style rooms are available for clients which are segregated by gender and shared among three to four of them. Each room is furnished with twin beds, dressers, and closets for each client. There are communal bathrooms which contain showers as well. There is an on-site laundry where residents can wash their clothes and bed linen. Common areas are available for clients where they can relax and watch TV in their free time. There is a fitness center for residents on the campus which is equipped with all basic gym equipment. Residents are also offered training and coaching in the computer lab and classrooms. A chapel is also available on the campus where residents are offered spiritual education and where weekly church services are carried out. Residents are offered three healthy and nutritious meals each day. A team on in-house chefs and kitchen staff prepares meals for clients which are then served in the cafeteria. All residents eat together in the cafeteria.
