Overview of Rushford Center

Rushford Center is an addiction and mental health treatment provider in Connecticut. It has been designated as a Local Mental Health Authority for the Meriden/Middletown region by the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services to make these services available for people of this region. The mission at Rushford is to provide affordable and high-quality services for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of addiction and mental health issues by working together with the Hartford Healthcare network partners. The center’s values revolve around a caring environment, the safety of clients, excellence in treatment, and integrity of behavior.
The center offers a variety of programs specifically designed for teens and adults including inpatient, outpatient, intensive outpatient, residential, and detox programs. The Mental Health Programs provide comprehensive services for serious disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorders, depression, suicidal thoughts, and other major issues. The center also offers the Rushford Academy School which offers a six-month residential substance abuse treatment program for adolescents aged 13-17. Students are provided with special education services along with their treatment to ensure that they do not miss out academically during that period. Rushford Academy School offers a comprehensive curriculum to students through state-of-the-art technology and certified special-education staff.

Housing and Food at Rushford

The residential program for teens is located at the Stonegate which is sprawled across 43 acres of a huge campus in a rural setting. The facility offers a safe, secure, private and serene environment where clients can start their healing journey and achieve lasting recovery. The center can accommodate 16 teens at one time. Private and semi-private rooms are available for clients. Rooms are adequately furnished with beds, side tables, desks, and closets for residents. Each room has an attached bathroom. There is a common room, gymnasium, weight and exercise room where students can work out. The center also offers outdoor recreational facilities for residents in the form of a soccer field, a basketball court, and a beautiful swimming pool. There is also a certified adventure ropes course for residents. The Adult residential facility can accommodate 42 patients who stay in gender-specific rooms. All rooms are shared among two, three, or four residents. Meals are prepared by in-house chefs and kitchen staff three times a day. Meals are served in designated cafeterias in the specific residential units. A variety of food options are available to choose from. The kitchen staff also accommodates special dietary restrictions or specifications of clients including vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free foods.

Payment Options

Rushford offers a variety of inpatient, outpatient, and detox programs for teens and adults. The rough cost of adult treatment is $690 per day and $615 per day for teens program. For the teens’ program, Rushford collaborates with SerenityLoans which finances treatment for addiction-related issues. Depending on certain factors, SerenityLoans could pay for complete or part of the treatment. Another non-profit organization Saving Teens in Crisis Collaborative (STICC) helps troubled teens and their families by funding and supporting families who cannot afford the treatment. For adult residential, Rushford accepts various insurance companies’ plans as payment for treatment. The admissions office guides clients regarding financial and insurance information.

Patricia A. Rehmer, MSN, ACHE

Patricia has a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Skidmore College and a Master’s degree in Nursing from St. Joseph’s College. She has over 30 years of experience working in the behavioral health industry in the private and public sectors. She has served as President of the Board of National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors.

J. Craig Allen, M.D.
Medical Director

Dr. Craig received his doctorate degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit, Michigan. He completed his residency in General Psychiatry at the Tufts University Medical School. He then completed his training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Harvard University Medical School. He joined Rushford in 2005. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in General and Adult Psychiatry.

James F. O’Dea, Ph.D., MBA
Vice President Operations

Dr. James has a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology and an MBA from the University of New Haven. He has served at various designations in the field of behavioral health working in inpatient, outpatient, intensive outpatient, and extended care programs.
