Eastman House is located in Pawtucket, RI and is distinguished by being one of the first drug rehab programs in the country geared towards adolescents. The Eastman House later evolved to an inpatient and outpatient treatment facility exclusively serving women suffering from substance abuse and co-occurring disorders.

Only the Essentials

The Eastman House offers mostly the basics in terms of substance abuse treatment. There is no detoxification unit and very little to speak of regarding treatment other than individual or group counseling. Most entrants to the Eastman House are given psychiatric evaluations upon admission and are then set up to receive either counseling or to speak with a case manager.

Most stays at Eastman House last from either 30 to 90 days depending on the client’s needs or desire to stay. The Eastman House offers its residents (women 18 and over) both inpatient and outpatient treatments. Inpatient treatments are limited to individual and group counseling, with the only variation of these being within the groups themselves.

The focus of these groups can range from matters of a spiritual nature to groups focused on strengthening and encouraging more assertiveness in women. When participants are ready, they can also lead the groups which help the women to learn and develop leadership skills.

The 12 Step program also plays a significant part in the treatment philosophy of Eastman House. If need be, however, residents can also schedule an appointment to receive psychiatric services with outside providers which counselors at the Eastman House can help them arrange. 12 Step meetings can also be attended off-site.

There is also a family night at Eastman House where loved ones and family members can attend Al-Anon meetings and have direct family counseling. Eastman House’s’ aftercare program involves women attending weekly individual and group counseling sessions.

A Lot of Extra Work

Inpatient housing can accommodate no more than 16 women at a time.. If you go into the inpatient program, you should expect to do a lot of support work, since there is no support staff to take care of daily housekeeping and culinary needs. It is not clear if this a part of the treatment by encouraging responsibility and self-sufficiency or simply due to a lack of funding.

As previously stated, most of the day-to-day upkeep at Eastman House is done by the clients themselves, so this includes doing grocery shopping to cooking to daily chores. Extras are also few and far between regarding extracurricular or recreational activities.

The Eastman House is located across from an abandoned shopping mall on a residential street with very little greenery to speak of, but there have been reports of day excursions to shopping malls or the movies.

Weighing Your Options

The Eastman House does not seem to be high on anyone’s list of favorite substance abuse treatment center. The treatments themselves are nothing special regarding uniqueness or being specially tailored to your specific needs.

You might find camaraderie with the other women housed in the inpatient program since you would all be responsible for the daily chores and cooking. But, at the same time, it also might put added stress on an already delicate situation by having so many people suffering from dual diagnosis disorders in one small space with little to do besides attending counseling.

You might be helped more by trying to find a local AA or NA meeting if you are truly in need of help with your substance abuse problem.

Cost for 30 days (no insurance): $4,410
