Phoenix House’s Citra Center, located in the small city of Citra and nestled in the picturesque hills of Marion County, is a residential treatment program for adult men and women dealing with substance abuse disorders, drug and alcohol addiction, and co-occurring illnesses. The center provides gender-specific treatment which is designed to facilitate a well-rounded treatment. The program is a part of the Phoenix House organization, a non-profit provider of substance abuse treatment which began in 1967. The institution was founded by six heroin addicts and was made into a structured, effective program by Dr. Mitchell S. Rosenthal, a psychiatrist, and other licensed counselors. The organization operates at more than 50 locations across multiples states including California, Texas, and New York and currently provides addiction and evidence-based behavioral health services to more than 3,000 men, women, and children. The Florida center claims that more than 88% of its clients report not doing drugs after receiving treatment and more than 95% of its clients report that they have learned or are still learning the skills necessary to maintain recovery. The rooms are furnished with lamps, dressers, and twin beds. The center aims for a well-rounded experience and offers the residents tennis and volleyball courts, workout equipment, a swimming pool, and a fitness trail.
Meals are served to the clients thrice daily. Food is served in the facility’s dining hall and healthy snacks are offered. Other treats and sodas can be gotten from the vending machine on-site.

Benjamin who has been working with the facility since 2015, has held previous positions including CCO (Chief Clinical Officer). He holds a Doctorate degree from Dartmouth where he majored in Medicine and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Pennsylvania majoring in Criminology. He went to the New York State Psychiatric Institute where he completed a training in Addiction Psychiatry and the Columbia University Medical Center where he completed a training in psychiatry as well. With a strong passion for helping patients with addiction disorder, Ben uses his position to help heal individuals and families challenged with such a problem.

Maria Alvarez – Senior Vice President, Florida (Executive Director)

Maria holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Phoenix where she majored in Business Management. Prior to working with the facility in February 2007, she served in different capacities such as Administrative and Finance Manager and more in different organizations gaining over 15 years of experience in the accounting and management field.
