Overview of Right Turn
Right Turn is a treatment center to fight addiction with its innovative outpatient program and supportive housing. It goes with a tagline as “A Creative Place for Recovery” due to its creative approach to addiction. It was established in the year 2003 in Watertown, Massachusetts by Woody Giessmann, a certified interventionist, acclaimed percussionist, and LADC.
Right Turn offers both inpatient and outpatient services to people who are struggling with substance abuse addiction along with co-occurring disorders such as trauma, depression, anxiety, and psychological and mental health issues. The facility believes that there is no single way to treat addiction and hence, uses several unconventional and conventional treatment programs in order to meet an individuals’ needs.
Right Turn uses artistic and expressive therapies as a healing and restorative method for a lasting recovery of not only artists but for all. It utilizes various music and art therapy to assist artists against addiction.
The mission of Right Turn is to transform the lives of people impacted by addiction with the help of creative art therapies along with a comprehensive treatment program based on evidence. The facility believes in a personalized healthcare program in a comforting setting.
Accommodation and Food
Right Turn offers housing services to men only. Its residential program is designed for clients who need extended care, which lasts up to six months. At a given time, it can accommodate only eight residents, where they establish a sober and healthy relationship within a structured, supportive, and safe environment.
Along with life skills, clients are also provided with complete clinical services and ongoing recovery care. This 16-bed residential facility for men is established in a historic yet beautifully renovated New England House. Clients reside in semi-private rooms in a home-like setting, where they get access to gardening as well. Clients get access to a local gym membership, on-site exercise room, and the Del Fuegos music studio with drums, pianos, and guitars.
Residents also host a live session at their sober café, Right Turn LIVE every Saturday.
Right Turn believes in rebuilding life skills such as self-care, housekeeping, budgeting, menu planning, cooking, and healthy food preparation. So, when it comes to food, residents have to take care of themselves.

The best part about Right Turn is that it turns into a sober café and performance venue every Saturday. It offers a great opportunity for residential artists who can interact with visiting local poets and rock stars. This facility even has a nationally commended radio program by the name Right Turn Radio, which discusses mental health and addiction.
About Right Turn’s Staff
A dedicated team of professionals works behind the creative force of Right Turn. The staff at Right Turn comprises 21 employees besides Geissmann, which include psychotherapists, MFTs, LADCs, CADCs, CIPs, addiction counselors, yoga instructor, radio producer, art therapists, clinical director, and medical director. Some of the notable personalities at this facility include:
CEO
Woody Giessmann was the drummer of the Del Fuegos, a rock hand. He joined the field of addiction after struggling with alcohol and drug use disorder himself in 1993. He is also a part of the AIS (Association for Intervention Specialists) team. He got appointed by Governor Charlie Baker to the Board of Registry in February 2016.
Addiction Counselor
Jim Gambino serves the Right Turn team as an addiction counselor. He also co-runs a music group at Right Turn, where clients heal while exploring music. He is working in the addiction field from the past 25 years. He joined the Right Turn in 2015 with an internship program. He completed an LADC program at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. He became a clinician in the year 2016. Now, Jim Gambino is also a popular musician who has starred on Late Night of NBC and Mountain Stage of NPR.
Psychotherapist and Addiction Specialist
Kate Dare-Winters is associated with the field of recovery and addiction from the past 26 years. Her major interest areas include trauma, spirituality, and co-occurring disorders. Kate has a M.Div. (Master of Divinity) from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific and an MSW (Master of Social Work) from Simmons School of Social Work. Currently, she also holds a private practice in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
