Overview of PRIDE Institute

The PRIDE Institute is a behavioral healthcare facility situated in the scenic town of Eden Prairie, Minnesota. The facility was established in 1986 when it became the first center to cater to the mental health and substance abuse issues faced by the LGBTQ community. This facility offers treatment and rehabilitation for both substance abuse and co-occurring disorders in inpatient and outpatient settings.
Members of this community, at the time and to this day, take recourse to drugs and alcohol abuse, more so than heterosexual people. Statistically, it has been found that about 25% of the LGBTQ community comprises of substance abuse victims. The number stands at 10% for the rest of the populace, which is less than half compared to gay and transgender people.
This is due to the discrimination and social injustices faced by this community which leads to them turning to substance abuse to get away from their harsh realities. PRIDE Institute aimed to provide a safe space for LGBTQ people. They provide treatment for not only the victims’ chemical dependencies but also the underlying mental health issues causing or stemming from the addictions.

Accommodation and Food

PRIDE Institute has the capacity to accommodate a total of up to 40 adult residents from all genders at a time. Rooms are offered on a shared basis and residents of the same sex are assigned to a bedroom. Residents are responsible for cleaning their rooms and doing laundry.
Food is offered three times a day and the menu comprises of healthy options comprising of vegetables, fruits, etc. Dietary restrictions due to allergies or other health constraints can be accommodated. Furthermore, a gym is available on-site which helps residents stay physically fit during their stay.

PRIDE Institute Amenities

Treatment at this facility commences with an initial assessment that allows the team to arrive at a diagnosis for each patient and draw up individualized treatment plans. After admission the rehabilitation can last anywhere between 30 days to 90 days. The length of the stay depends upon a particular client’s needs and progress in their program. Even their outpatient program has provisions to provide patients with lodging facilities.
PRIDE has a good success rate which stands testament to their effectiveness. Being an institute that caters only to an LGBTQ clientele, their staff is especially equipped to deal and help with the specific issues faced by this minority group. Apart from substance abuse rehabilitation, they also offer psychiatric support for anxiety, trauma, depression, etc. Their programs aim to help the gay and transgender community to overcome their self-esteem issues and reintegrate back into society.

Terri Hayden
CEO

Terri Hayden has several years of experience in the field of behavioral healthcare, most of which she has spent serving in administrative or managerial positions. As CEO, she is in charge of overseeing the operation of the various departments at the facility. She has a Bachelor’s in Psychology from Augsburg College and a Master’s in psychology from St. Mary’s University.

Patrick Zhao
Medical Director

Patrick Zhao has been acting as the medical director of PRIDE since 2014. In this position, he oversees the planning and execution of treatment programs and ensures the incorporation of both psychiatric and spiritual interventions into them. He conducts therapy sessions where he offers insights into the history of the LGBT people and its relation with the development of substance abuse and mental health disorders in the community.

Terry Post
Lead Counselor

Terry Post is a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor who specializes in sexual health and addictions related counseling. Since joining the team at PRIDE in 2014, he has been serving as the lead Counselor, a position he enjoys as it allows him to help people overcome their addictions and forge healthy sexual identities. He has a Bachelor of Science in alcohol and drug counseling from the Metro State University.
