Overview of Malvern Institute

The Malvern Institute has been offering comprehensive treatment services to individuals and families for addiction since 1948. It is the oldest private addiction treatment center in the region which has now expanded into being one of Pennsylvania’s most comprehensive substance abuse treatment providers. The mission of Malvern Institute is to offer treatment for chemical dependency to all those in need in a compassionate and dignified manner with the help of the best clinical care possible. The institute has two inpatient centers and several outpatient facilities across the nation. It offers detox, interventions, inpatient program, medically-assisted treatment, and outpatient programs. The center also offers a Women’s Empowerment Program where women suffering from substance abuse and behavioral health disorders are treated with gender-specific programming. All treatment programs at the center utilize holistic approaches and evidence-based therapies which help clients in their journey towards recovery. Through the compassionate and nurturing environment that the center provides, clients are able to inspire hope and joy along the way. The dedicated and experienced staff offers guidance and counseling to clients through individual, group, and family therapy. The 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) also play an important role in treating the minds, bodies, and spirits of clients.

Housing and Food at Malvern Institute

The Malvern Institute is located on 8 acres of beautiful land in Chester County. It is just at a distance of 27 miles from Philadelphia, bordered by Paoli on the east and Exton on the west. The campus provides a private and spacious facility to clients where they can focus on their healing without any distractions of the outside world. The campus is set in a rural and country setting. It can accommodate 59 residential patients and 21 detox clients. The detox patients stay in triple-occupancy rooms. For residential patients, private and semi-private rooms are available. Private rooms have attached bathrooms whereas other patients share bathrooms. All rooms are furnished with twin beds, side tables, dressers, and closets. There are common rooms equipped with flat-screen TVs for residents. Residents are allowed to relax and watch TV in the common rooms during their breaks. The country setting of the campus provides residents with a number of healthy outdoor activities including sports, yoga, meditation, and strolls on the walking trails. The center has employed a set of in-house chefs who prepare healthy, nutritious, and fresh meals for clients three times a day. Residents have a number of food options to choose from including an elaborate salad bar at lunch and dinner.

The Malvern Institute provides a number of treatment services to adults for substance abuse and behavioral health disorders. Each client is provided with an individual assessment and psychiatric evaluation. An individualized treatment plan is then created for him/her with a specific level of care assigned. The cost of treatment depends on each client’s individualized treatment plan and duration of stay. The approximate cost of 30 days of residential treatment is around $15,000. Nicholas C. Tenaglia, MD
Chief Executive Officer

Nicholas is an ex-serviceman who joined the military during the Vietnam war. He observed many servicemen addicted to drugs during his duty which led him to create a drug treatment program for servicemen. He founded the 90-day drug rehabilitation program which showed success in achieving recovery. That program expanded to become the Malvern Institute which now provides a wide range of treatment services to adult men and women.

Peter Swanljung, MD, DABAM
Chief of Psychiatry

Dr. Peter is a graduate of the College of William and Mary. He received his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine. He completed his Residency in Adult Psychiatry at Drexel University. He is Board Certified in Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. His areas of expertise include cognitive behavioral therapy and clinical excellence.

David Lumpkin, MSW, LSW
Executive Director

David has a BA in Psychology from Syracuse University and a Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania. He specializes in cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing. He had many years of experience working at various hospitals and behavioral healthcare centers before joining Malvern Institute in 2011.
