The Ernest E. Kennedy Center Overview

The Ernest E. Kennedy Center, situated in Berkeley County, South Carolina, is a mental health treatment and substance abuse organization that provides care and treatment to youths and adults seeking treatment. With over 15 years in operation and two locations (Goose Creek and Moncks Corner) in the suburbs of Charleston, the facility offers intensive outpatient and outpatient services to adult men, women, and adolescents. Treatment modalities used include holistic therapies for treating the mind, body, and soul, 12-step treatment philosophy, and evidence-based methods.
Treatment offered to clients at the facility is well-rounded and structured using the multiphase CENAPS (DMR) Developmental Model of Recovery. This model of recovery consists of six stages namely:

  • Transition: This is the first stage and it is characterized under denial and resistance.
  • Stabilization: This is the second stage and is characterized under recognition of the issue or addiction.
  • Early Recovery: This is the third stage and entails the adopting and learning of coping skills and many more.

The other stages under the DMR include Middle Recovery, Late Recovery, and Maintenance but treatment offered at the facility focuses on the first three stages. Clients registered under the intensive outpatient program will be required to participate in eighteen sessions of group therapy. Generally, clients attend three group sessions per week and are able to complete the entire program in six weeks. These sessions are flexible and usually take place in the night and topics discussed ranges from addiction education to utilizing cognitive behavioral skills in processing techniques. Clients under the IOP will benefit from the intimacy obtained in this program, as the ratio of staff-to-client is no more than one-to-twelve in group sessions. All group therapy sessions are facilitated by qualified addiction counselors who are licensed professional counselors. These licensed counselors see clients once a week for individual therapy or as needed. After enrollment into the facility, clients partake in compulsory treatments and are encouraged to participate in outside 12-step meetings. The facility at this time does not offer aftercare programs, but clients tend to choose to continue group therapy for several weeks after completing the initial primary care.
The facility also provides quality care to adolescent seeking treatment and they may choose to get basic outpatient care or intensive outpatient care. The basic outpatient track requires adolescents to participate and attend group sessions once or twice weekly. They are also required to attend one-on-one sessions with counselors every other week. The intensive outpatient track is stricter and more comprehensive treatment is offered. It entails attending individual therapy and group meetings for at least 9 hours per week. Although the IOP track is a more intensive treatment approach, adolescents can still attend work and school with little to no disruption.
