Timberline Knolls Residential Treatment Center is a place like no other. It sprang up as the necessary solution to the problem of a lack of an integrated, holistic treatment center for women.
Timberline Knolls became both a drug rehab as well as a place for women suffering from eating and co-occurring disorders. Timberline Knolls retains its unique status as one of the only treatment centers to offer treatments for all these different afflictions.
Compassion at its Best
The first Timberline Knolls residence opened in 2005, as an integrated treatment center for the treatment of anorexia and bulimia. It also treated drug addiction and helped young women suffering from post-traumatic stress.
The choice of location on nearly 43 acres of pristine woodlands was intended to offer an environment where residents could feel safe as well as inspire them to heal and reflect. The first residential lodge, the Oak lodge housed Timberline Knolls’ first patients.
Aside from the residences, the Timberline Knolls’ campus boasts a worn and weathered artist’s’ studio as well as outdoor activity grounds. There is also an artificial lake ideal for contemplation and introspection.
Having encountered success with their treatment programs for adolescent women Timberline Knolls expanded their program in 2006 to offer treatment to adult women as well. There are now four residences that comprise the Timberline Knolls Treatment Center, the Oak, the Maple, the Pine and the Willow lodge.
Timberline Knolls does not subscribe to one particular treatment track. Instead, Timberline Knolls does thorough psychiatric and medical assessments before a patient is admitted to find out what combination of treatments would help them best.
Timberline Knolls acknowledges and recognizes that most of the disorders it treats do not occur in isolation. A young woman may not only suffer from drug addiction but depression and anxiety as well. This is why it is so important to discover which treatments or battery of treatments a resident will respond to the most.
Since there are so many aspects of a young woman’s affliction to treat, the staff at Timberline Knolls draw expertise from a variety of disciplines including psychotherapy, expressive therapy, nutritionists, education and yoga and meditation practitioners. This means that no one treatment plan is the same. Treatment stays, which usually last for the requisite 28-days, are supposed to treat all afflictions that a woman may be experiencing.
Typical days for both adolescent and adult women follow a structure that resembles a university student’s day, with core (required) therapy sessions placed alongside elective blocks where residents choose their form of treatment.
Residents awaken to tranquil, unhurried mornings that allow them to ease into the day. Group meetings take place right after breakfast and are informed by dialectical behavioral therapy that helps participants learn new coping skills and to reorganize their emotional responses to outside stresses.
The Timberline Knolls Academy abuts the principal residences. The Academy hosts classes for any young woman in residence who still wants to maintain their academic status.
They can earn credits on their school transcripts. Classes are given throughout the day and are mixed in with patients core commitments and their elective courses.
The schedule for adult women leaves more room for core and elective groups since they do not usually need to attend classes. Educational time is used up by 12 Step meetings.
Adolescents also have the option to attend in the evening. Elective groups for both adolescents and adults range from expressive therapies like dance and art, as well as more holistic treatments like yoga and cooking classes.
Timberline Knolls has also started to offer its treatment options in an outpatient as well as partial hospitalization environment, so patients can make use of their services without having to be admitted as an inpatient. Therapy sessions last a whole day, from 9 am to 3 pm.
They are made up of six-hour therapy sessions with a counselor, as well as some of the same elective courses that Timberline Knolls offers at its residential program, courses like art therapy or motivational interviewing.
The Timberline Knolls Residential Treatment Center has been serving both adolescent and adult women during the most important times in their lives. Timberline Knolls takes in the most vulnerable young women and gives them a safe place to be heard, as well as helping them discover what treatment would help them best.
