Jude House Inc. Overview

Jude House is a nonprofit 24-hour long-term substance abuse rehabilitation center located in peaceful and scenic Bel Alton, Maryland. The facility is a combination of an inpatient treatment center and a traditional sober living environment. The story of Jude House starts in 1972 when a recovering alcoholic temporarily housed a friend in a cabin off of US Route 301. There was a small building where recovering alcoholics could stay and support each other. Two years later, in 1974, Jude House moved from that small building to a bigger location – a farmhouse in Dentsville. Volunteers and supporters of Jude House successfully petitioned for the treatment center to be moved to the old Bel Alton School building where the organization moved in 1979. At first, Jude House offered residential treatment services only, but as of 2012 outpatient programs are also provided.

Jude House Inc. Housing

The residential treatment facility is gender-specific meaning men and women don’t spend time in the same building, floor, depending on the arrangement of a specific recovery center. Jude House’s facility has 45 beds of which 35 are for men and only 10 for women. Two rooms are designated for women each with five beds. So, one female patient has up to four roommates. On the other hand, men have more comfort. Up to three male patients stay in one room. All rooms are simple and plain. There’s just a bed and storage space, but don’t get it wrong, simplicity can be a good thing too, especially for a person’s mind during a recovery process. Clients at Jude House can work on their fitness as there’s exercise equipment and they can spend some time watching TV.

Jude House Inc. Treatment Options

As mentioned above, Jude House used to provide only inpatient treatment services only, but today they also offer outpatient programs. The main mission of this recovery center is not only to guide their patients toward a substance-free life but also to improve their overall well-being and quality of life. Treatment for addiction to drugs and alcohol at Jude House focuses on a 12-step approach which is considered standard in substance abuse recovery. It’s important to mention dual diagnosis cases are also treated. Those are the cases when a client has an addiction to alcohol or drugs and underlying mental health and emotional problem.
Residential treatment lasts 90 days minimum and clients have a lot to do during the day as part of the recovery process. Throughout the day various group therapies are set up, each carrying its own specific benefits. During the first 30 days of the residential treatment clients can’t have visitors or use the phone, but over the next 30 days they can have up to four visitors at a time and use the phone. In the last 30 days, clients can seek employment in case they’re unemployed. Clients who are in the outpatient program have a similar schedule, various therapies, but don’t spend their nights in Jude House facility.
