Legacy Outdoor Adventures is a treatment and rehabilitation program for males aged 18-35 struggling with addiction and behavioral health issues. The program focuses on helping individuals in discovering themselves and learning tools for personal growth. The mission at Legacy Outdoor Adventures is to offer clients healing and recovery through a unique wilderness experience and treatment-centered programming. The wilderness environment offers an opportunity for clients to learn techniques for surviving in the unknown. The wilderness offers profound healing through beautiful landscapes, the absence of light and air pollution, physical activity, and nutritious food. New and innovative therapies such as Motivational Interviewing and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy are utilized by Master-level therapists. The multidisciplinary staff is also comprised of experienced field instructors who conduct physical training and activities of clients to ensure that they get the maximum benefit out of the experience. Clients are engaged in adventure-based activities such as climbing mountains, trekking barren deserts, and navigating through forests. This enables them to discover their inner self and overcome the challenges laid out for them. Family members are also involved in the wilderness experience which helps clients and families rebuild their relationships. These holistic activities and therapies help clients in the successful transition to a healthier, happier, and productive life.

Housing and Food at Legacy Outdoor Adventures

The Legacy Outdoor Adventures Program is located in the high mountains and vast deserts of Loa, Utah in Wayne County. The campus is sprawled across acres of vast lands that offer beautiful views and a unique wilderness experience which helps clients in their journey to recovery. There is a treatment center where clients can shower and do their laundry in the treatment center days. The rest of the time, they spend trying to survive out in the open wilderness. Clients stay in tents and sleeping bags which are provided by the facility. All outdoor clothing, hiking and camping gear, and cooking equipment are provided by the center. Clients spend most of their time trekking, hiking, mountaineering, rock climbing, mountain biking, and navigating through the vast landscapes of the facility.
Clients assist the staff members in cooking meals three times a day. Each group of clients and staff prepare meals for their own group. All cooking ingredients and products are provided by the center. Special emphasis is made to provide nutritious and high-caloric foods to clients. These include fruits, vegetables, legumes, and other high-protein items. Clients learn new cooking skills when assisting supervisors in preparing meals which further aids in their healing.

Legacy Outdoor Adventures offers residential treatment for addiction and psychiatric issues through a unique wilderness experience. The approximate cost of treatment is $17,250 for 30 days duration. The facility works with many insurance companies where they bill them for the cost of treatment of clients instead of clients getting reimbursements at the end of treatment after they somehow pay the whole cost up front. This strategy helps a lot of such clients and families who are unable to pay the whole fee up front. The highly supportive and helpful admissions staff provides all relevant insurance information to clients and families.

Legacy Outdoor Adventures provides a structured, adventure-based treatment to adult males aged 18-35 suffering from issues of addiction and behavioral health. Clients struggling with a wide array of mental health issues such as substance abuse, struggling with the transition into adulthood, lacking self-confidence, having social anxiety, having fear of failure, and a combination of any of these issues are targeted at the facility. Each client is offered an individualized Life Success Plan that is comprised of various adventure and experiential therapies. Clients are able to learn how to survive in the wilderness where they spend most of their time mountaineering, hiking, and navigating through the pristine forests. The 12-step principles lay the foundation of the evidence-based treatment methods employed at the facility. Clients go through three main steps of self-discovery where they accept that they have a problem, acknowledge that help is available if they want it, and finally to foster the desire to achieve lasting sobriety.

Gil Hallows
Executive Director

Gil has served at various prestigious designations in the behavioral healthcare industry. He truly believes in the healing power of the outdoor and incorporates it in the treatment programs at Legacy Outdoor Adventures. He served as the President of the Outdoor Behavioral Healthcare Council and also co-founded the Outdoor Behavioral Healthcare Research Cooperative. He has also served on the board of the National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs (NATSAP).

Troy Faddis
Clinical Director

Troy has a Bachelor of Science degree in Family Sciences from Brigham Young University. He has a Masters of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy from Seattle Pacific University. He has been working in wilderness therapy programs since 2001. His areas of expertise include working with adolescents and adults suffering from substance abuse and co-occurring disorders.

Steve Kern
Therapist

Steve has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Southwest Baptist University and a Masters of Social Work from the University of Kansas. He has been working in the behavioral healthcare industry for over 25 years. His areas of expertise including using therapies such as Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Experiential Therapy in providing holistic treatment to his clients.
